Conduction and Turbulent Mixing in Galaxy Clusters

چکیده
We discuss hydrostatic models of galaxy clusters in which heat diffusion balances radiative cooling. We consider two different sources of diffusion, thermal conduction and turbulent mixing, parameterized by dimensionless coefficients, f and αmix, respectively. Models with thermal conduction give reasonably good fits to the density and temperature profiles of several cooling flow clusters, but some clusters require unphysically large values of f > 1. Models with turbulent mixing give good fits to all clusters, with reasonable values of αmix ∼ 0.01− 0.03. Both types of models are found to be essentially stable to thermal perturbations. The mixing model reproduces the observed scalings of various cluster properties with temperature, and also explains the entropy floor seen in galaxy groups.

Regulation of Thermal Conductivity in Hot Galaxy Clusters by Mhd Turbulence
The role of thermal conduction in regulating the thermal behavior of cooling flows in galaxy clusters is reexamined. Recent investigations have shown that the anisotropic Coulomb heat flux caused by a magnetic field in a dilute plasma drives a dynamical instability. A long standing problem of cooling flow theory has been to understand how thermal conduction can offset radiative core losses with...
متن کاملThermal Instability in Clusters of Galaxies with Conduction
We consider a model of galaxy clusters in which the hot gas is in hydrostatic equilibrium and maintains energy balance between radiative cooling and heating by thermal conduction. We analyze the thermal stability of the gas using a Lagrangian perturbation analysis. For thermal conductivity at the level of ∼ 20 − 40% of Spitzer conductivity, consistent with previous estimates for cluster gas, we...
متن کاملBuoyancy Instabilities in Galaxy Clusters: Convection Due to Adiabatic Cosmic Rays and Anisotropic Thermal Conduction
Using a linear stability analysis and two and three-dimensional nonlinear simulations, we study the physics of buoyancy instabilities in a combined thermal and relativistic (cosmic ray) plasma, motivated by the application to clusters of galaxies. We argue that cosmic ray diffusion is likely to be slow compared to the buoyancy time on large length scales, so that cosmic rays are effectively adi...
متن کاملTurbulent Mixing in Clusters of Galaxies
We present a spherically-symmetric, steady-state model of galaxy clusters in which radiative cooling from the hot gas is balanced by heat transport through turbulent mixing. We assume that the gas is in hydrostatic equilibrium, and describe the turbulent heat diffusion by means of a mixing length prescription with a dimensionless parameter αmix. Models with αmix ∼ 0.01 − 0.03 yield reasonably g...
متن کاملModels of Galaxy Clusters with Thermal Conduction
We present a simple model of hot gas in galaxy clusters, assuming hydrostatic equilibrium and energy balance between radiative cooling and thermal conduction. For five clusters, A1795, A1835, A2199, A2390 and RXJ1347.5-1145, the model gives a good description of the observed radial profiles of electron density and temperature, provided we take the thermal conductivity κ to be about 30% of the S...
